Smug Brothers “In the Book of Bad Ideas”

Happy album release day to Smug Brothers ! Their new LP, ‘In the Book of Bad Ideas’, is officially out everywhere today via Anyway Records.

“Columbus’ Smug Brothers are true lo-fi indie rock lifers, with the Kyle Melton-led band having been at it for nearly twenty years (almost all of it also with drummer, “co-pilot”, and former Guided by Voices member Don Thrasher). The group has been putting out records of mid-fi bite-sized power pop at a steady clip and haven’t slowed down in recent years (see the three albums they released in 2019, for example). Their newest album, In the Book of Bad Ideas, is yet another collection of distorted, hooky fare that puts them in line with bands like fellow Ohioans Connections and Tennessee’s Mythical Motors, but with a hint of the post-punk darkness that frequently lurks outside of Smug Brothers’ jangle.”- Rosy Overdrive

“Jangly and infectious” – Stereogum

“‘Let Me Know When It’s Yes’” perfectly exemplifies Smug Brothers’ blend of power pop, new wave, and indie rock. The track bursts with infectious melodies and jangly guitars, accompanied by a driving rhythm section that will remind you of several classic tracks from The Toms or The Plimsouls. The band’s tight and dynamic arrangement strikes a balance between rawness and polish, drawing inspiration from classic rock ‘n’ roll while infusing their own modern twist. This latest record represents yet another confident step forward for Smug Brothers and is sure to rank among their best works to date!” -Chris Anthony//The Fire Note

“As it should be in any party playlist, slow tracks are followed by fast and energizing ones. The Smug Brothers’ track “Let Me Know When It’s Yes” is a catchy indie song with a light retro vibe. The unique vocals of the musicians blend seamlessly with the clear and bright rhythm of the arrangement, making it one of the best tracks of summer 2023.” – Indie Boulevard

“a nice bit of power pop” – Brooklyn Vegan
