Log - Log Almighty

("Log Almighty" reviews)

Let’s get right down to it. Log is not your typical indie-rock band. They’re a bunch of slightly older Ohioans that still cling to the idea of making music, even though most of their contemporaries gave it up a long time ago.

Songwriter/guitar player Paul Nini is a professor at a very large midwestern university. His brother Chris Nini (organ/piano) manages the media department of a large book and music chain store. Bass player Shirley Tobias is a human factors and usability consultant. Drummer Greg Bonnell (who also plays in Columbus’ Moviola) is a hot shot graphic designer. Keith Dimoff (guitar) is an assistant director of a statewide environmental council.

So -- as you can see -- jobs, spouses, kids, and life’s vagaries keep the Log folks pretty busy. Yet here they are with a new release, Log Almighty, that was three-plus years in the making — and which is, by far, their most confident and realized work. Some things really do get better with age, and Log, apparently, is one of them.

Log’s most recent release, Auto Fire Life (1999, Old 3C) received glowing reviews from publications including The Big Takeover, The Other Paper, and Badaboom Gramaphone. Magnet's Fred Mills described it as "seething with the kind of angular, melodic tension that will be familiar to anyone who ever clasped the Feelies or the Clean close to their bosom."

Dagger publisher Tim Hinely commented, "for just a second I wish every band on the planet sounded just like 'em." While Shredding Paper's Matt Roberts references "a clear '80s pop element, and an evocative, timeless feeling that only the Go-Betweens and like-minded bands effortlessly tossed-off when times were different."

Log Almighty should likewise generate critical superlatives and raves from long-time fans. This release sees the band moving away from the tighter rock sound of its previous release to something more organic and sophisticated. The addition of various keyboards, acoustic guitars, horns, strings, and special guests add some new layers and textures to Log's well-crafted songs, and opens up a new chapter in this long-running band's indie-rock story.
